European Commission

This institution of the European Union can be considered the "day-to-day administration" of the EU. The members of the European Commission are called "euro commissioners. Each euro commissioner is responsible for one or more policy areas. There are currently 28 euro commissioners, one for each member state. Together they form the College of Euro Commissioners. The euro commissioners must represent the interests of the European Union as a whole, not those of their own country. The European Commission is the only EU institution allowed to propose legislation; it has the so-called right of initiative. In addition, the Commission checks that European legislation is correctly applied in member states, negotiates in international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) about the Union's trade with "foreign countries," and is responsible for managing the European budget of about 140 billion euros a year.
