Over 3 years of AVG - lessons, developments & opportunities
December 7, 2021 | Amsterdam
The General Data Protection Regulation (AVG), which actually went into effect more than three years ago, is still keeping a lot of minds busy. The privacy law has a major impact on how companies and government agencies should handle privacy and the protection of personal data. Organizations are required to meet strict(er) requirements for protecting personal data and to have their privacy policies in order. In recent years, however, it has become apparent that this is not always easy in practice.
Increasing dependence on a digital infrastructure increases the digital vulnerability of organizations. Both companies and government agencies regularly appear in the news because of the inadequate security of ICT systems. As a result, large amounts of privacy-sensitive information have ended up on the streets. The unlawful collection or exchange of personal data also occurs regularly, resulting in lawsuits and (high) fines from the Personal Data Authority (AP).

New EU privacy regulations: behind the times or a major step forward?
Robert van den Hoven van Genderen, University of Lapland
With the advent of the AVG, the EU has a solid privacy framework in place. To complement this, new laws are being worked on at the EU level, including in the areas of ePrivacy and AI. What is the latest state of play? And what about (international) data transfer after Schrems II and the Brexit? Get an update on the latest developments and practical application and enforcement in this lecture.
Democracy in a digital world: how can the Internet become a public place again?
Jurriën Hamer, Rathenau Institute
For years there have been warnings that the power of tech companies in the public sector is too great. Also, in recent years, public values have not been central enough in decision-making around ICT for governments. The lecture will therefore focus on the following questions: how can the Internet become a public place again? And what initiatives are being taken at the national and European level?
Cyber attacks on (vital) organizations: beyond the myth of humans as the weakest link
Michel van Eeten, TU Delft
Organizations can fail to do their jobs, facilities can fail, and personal data can go out on the street. What are the current digital threats and how are they being addressed? How are people unintentionally trained to make mistakes? And what solutions are out there? In this lecture you will learn all about them.
Identifying & preventing data breaches
Rosalie Brand, Kennedy Van der Laan
A data breach is a breach that occurs on the security of personal data within an organization. In this workshop, you will learn more about organizing, designing and implementing privacy-proof ICT systems to identify and prevent data breaches.
Privacy in healthcare
Martin Hemmer, AKD
Technology can make healthcare a lot cheaper and more efficient, but the privacy of those involved should not be compromised in the process. Medical data is sensitive, so the AVG stipulates that this personal data may only be used if special conditions are met. In this workshop you will learn more about privacy in healthcare.
The role and position of the Data Protection Officer (FG)
Eliëtte Vaal, The Data Lawyers
The data protection officer (FG) holds an essential role as advisor and supervisor of personal data protection within organizations. In this workshop, you will learn more about the role and positioning of the FG in relation to other responsible parties.
Privacy in employment law
Friederike van der Jagt, Hunter Legal
Privacy law questions frequently come up in the workplace. What may and may not an employer ask in cases of illness? May employers monitor employees' online activities? In this workshop, you will learn more about privacy in employment law.
Privacy in AI
Menno Weij, BDO Legal
The possibilities of AI for solving various issues and designing business processes are accompanied by high expectations. It is therefore important that privacy laws are observed when developing and using AI applications that process personal data. In this workshop, you will learn more about privacy in AI.
Privacy in the financial industry
Kim Lucassen & Nina Orlic, Loyens & Loeff
As the financial sector increasingly digitizes, more and more questions about data protection and privacy also arise. In this workshop, you will learn more about how financial institutions, which process large amounts of personal data, can handle privacy efficiently.
