In conversation with a mover: Silvia Vinken, attorney at VDB Attorneys at Law Notaries

Career

1. Why did you choose this position?
VDB Lawyers has a strategic alliance with WVDB Advisors, which includes accountants and tax consultants. My new work environment is no longer purely legal but encourages working for clients from a multidisciplinary environment. Especially for privacy consulting, this offers added value. In the short time that I have been here, I have already had contact several times with the IT Audit & Advice department, who are also active within the privacy domain in the field of information security, a component that also plays an important role in privacy consultancy. I really believe in the added value of this.

2. Where did your interest in privacy law come from?
My interest was initially sparked by the increased supervisory role of the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens. I was already active in administrative enforcement practice. Gradually, privacy law also piqued my interest substantively. The fact that there are many open standards that give room for interpretation and interpretation appeals to me. The latter combined with a practical translation to the client.

3. What do you see as the biggest challenge in your new position?
The multidisciplinary nature of the organization offers opportunities but also means that getting 'owned' by the organization will take a bit longer than it normally might. It is nice that I am given all the space I need for this.

4. What is your biggest annoyance regarding privacy law?
At the very top of the list is the unnecessary scaremongering in the media in the run-up to the AVG by constantly pointing out that high fines will be imposed for non-compliance. Another annoyance is also the unnecessary request for permission to process personal data.

5. Who or what inspires you and why?
From a professional work perspective, that is Jan Berkvens, an authority in privacy land, with whom I had the pleasure of working for a number of years. The amount of knowledge he possesses is admirable. I learned a lot from him.

In the In Motion section, we will keep you informed of personnel changes in the privacy domain. Are you also In Motion? Let us know!
