Volkswagen Group

The German Chaos Computer Club (CCC) claimed late last year, based on its own research, that the Volkswagen Group was systematically collecting location data from hundreds of thousands of electric Volkswagens, Audis, Skodas and Seats. This data was not properly secured.

Time and place

This allowed CCC investigators to access data on hundreds of thousands of cars. This included owner information and vehicle location data, including the time and place the car was parked. The data was obtained through the Volkswagen app. This app is intended for functions such as pre-warming the car and viewing the driving range.

Gym or snack bar

The data collected by the vehicles may end up with a variety of parties. The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens warns of the privacy risks: "From location data, for example, it is possible to deduce how often someone goes to the doctor, visits the gym or just a snack bar and what time someone comes home from work." Earlier, the privacy regulator published a guide on how people can protect their privacy when using a connected car.
