Apeldoorn commits to building 5G network

The municipality of Apeldoorn is committed to building a 5G network. To this end, the municipality today signed a letter of intent with the Austrian company RadioLEDInternational GmbH. The joint ambition is to have a covering 5G Core network constructed in Apeldoorn by 2021.

Municipality of Apeldoorn January 24, 2019

The Municipality of Apeldoorn, under the heading of Smart City, is working on (technological) solutions to improve livability and economic competitiveness, among other things. RadioLED's proposal to investigate whether the construction of a 5GCorenetwork in Apeldoorn is possible can give a boost to these ambitions. In the coming months, RadioLED will investigate what legal, financial and technical measures are still needed. The company's ambition is to then begin construction in the fall of 2019.

Alderman Willems: "This goes beyond a nice project, this lays the foundation for all the technological solutions of the future: a network that enables those solutions. This is how Apeldoorn as a Smart City comes ever closer. From the government, the task is to have the 5G network rolled out in a few years: we don't wait, we start now, on this scale as the first city in the Netherlands."

Anticipating national ambition
The national Digital Connectivity Action Plan states that by 2023 all Dutch people must have fast Internet (at least 100 mb/sec), a large majority even very fast Internet (1Gigabite per second). A coverage obligation for wireless communication (including 5G) is a precondition for this. With this letter of intent, Apeldoorn anticipates that ambition.

Opportunities for business
The Apeldoorn business community is embracing the opportunities the network offers. The Apeldoorn IT partnership has responded positively and is joining forces to develop smart applications on this new network.
