The relaxation allows app makers to redirect users to platforms other than the App Store to make payments there, Reuters news agency reported. Apple hopes to avoid a fine for violating the DMA with this relaxation.
Apple previously banned app makers from directing users to other platforms to make payments. For that, the tech giant was already fined 500 million euros in April. In addition to lifting the ban on sales outside the App Store, app makers will have to remit a lower percentage of their revenue to Apple. With these changes, Apple is trying to avoid another fine. Fines for violating the DMA can amount to 5 percent of daily profits.
A European Commission spokesman said that the Commission will look into the adjustments and verify that Apple's policies are now in line with the DMA. Apple has until July 7 to appeal the April fine. A spokesman for the tech giant has already said the company plans to do so.
