Tax authority optimizes millions of tax returns through Human Inference's DataPlatform

For over two hundred years, the Tax Authority has contributed to the financial health of the Netherlands. As part of the Ministry of Finance, they collect and levy state taxes and contributions on a daily basis. Doing this fairly and carefully keeps money available for essentials such as health care, education and public transportation.

One of the Tax Administration's most important tasks is to process millions of returns each year. This complex process requires linking countless data from various sources to the records.

To perform this task more efficiently, and to match external information with internal data, the Inland Revenue uses the software solution DataPlatform from Human Inference (part of The Data Agency).

The right data

To handle and process all those returns as efficiently as possible, using the right data is essential

The Internal Revenue Service maintains an extensive database of data on citizens and businesses who are taxpayers. Because this information often changes due to such things as moves or divorces, regular data updates are important.

DataPlatform compares information from different sources. It matches, checks and validates data and selects the right person. In other words, it ensures up-to-date records and guaranteed data quality. This process works as follows:

For example, the Inland Revenue receives a lot of data from taxpayers through various agencies, such as salary data from employers and bank data from customers. All this information they receive in various formats and thus must be matched, checked and validated.

This is where DataPlatform comes in. The Inland Revenue uses the software solution for the identification and verification process.

The software compares personal data from different sources, such as employer and bank, to verify that it is the same person. This is done through a matching engine that compares information fault-tolerant and identifies the same person. DataPlatform also verifies the BSN number by comparing it fault-tolerantly with the personal data supplied.

Once a year, around the start of the tax return campaign, the Inland Revenue receives a lot of person-related information from various agencies. DataPlatform then helps to match, check and validate data with what is already known. This is the only way for the Tax Administration to get a good picture of every taxpayer in the system and to be able to fill out and prepare correct returns in advance.

The Internal Revenue Service wants to provide everyone with a smooth and fair tax experience. Human Inference's DataPlatform helps them achieve that goal by verifying information and identifying individuals. In doing so, they improve every pre-completed return and process the millions of returns efficiently and correctly.
