Decision aid AI regulation available

Last year the AI Regulation entered into force, the European law that provides rules for the deployment of AI applications. To help governments, the AI Regulation Decision Aid (link to other website) has recently become available. This decision aid helps to verify whether the AI Regulation applies to an AI application that a government organization uses. And what requirements must be met for this application.

AI regulation in brief

The European AI Regulation entered into force on Aug. 1, 2024, and describes the rights and obligations of developers and user-responsible AI systems in the European Union. These rules should ensure the development and use of reliable AI. This should ensure that citizens' trust in AI is strengthened, making room for innovation and economic development. By establishing risk categories (prohibited AI, high-risk AI and risk of deception), the EU aims to ensure this.
Some AI practices will be prohibited from Feb. 2, 2025. Other AI systems must comply with the law from August 2026 or August 2030.

Knowledge products

This law also applies to government organizations in the Netherlands: from implementing organizations, municipalities, provinces, water boards to the state. As providers and/or users of AI systems, they will have to comply with the new rules set by this law. The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations supports governments in complying with the AI Regulation.
To prepare government organizations as well as possible for the phased entry into force of the AI Regulation, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has developed several knowledge products, including the decision aid(link to other website), several webinars(link to other website), knowledge clips(link to other website) and background articles.

More information on existing laws and regulations, as well as tips and tools for the responsible use of AI and algorithms can be found in the algorithm framework(link to other website).

The decision aid is under development. All versions are under open development. Suggestions are actively encouraged.
