With the growing presence and influence of cameras and sensors on the streets, transparency about their application to residents is important. To support municipalities with unambiguous communication, a guideline is available with templates for signs, stickers and other communication tools.

The signs, stickers and other communication around sensors in the streets can be printed by the municipalities themselves from their existing suppliers. The G4 municipalities have already tested this in pilots and will incorporate it into their policies and approaches.
According to the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG), camera surveillance must be communicated, but the law does not set requirements for the method of communication. As a result, the approach varies by municipality. From the need for a uniform national guideline, suitable for various contexts, the VNG has developed a guideline together with a consortium of 8 partners.
In addition to VNG, the consortium consists of the four large municipalities, the province of North Brabant, Delft University of Technology, the Responsible Sensing Lab and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions.
