The parliamentarians from the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) spoke with representatives of film and music studios, unions, media companies and U.S. Congresswoman Laura Friedman. "Our constructive discussions made it clear that we share many common concerns, such as protecting creators' interests and developing fair remuneration systems," the MEPs said in a joint statement.
The risks of AI, such as deepfakes, algorithmic bias and threats to copyright, were discussed at length. The delegation pointed out that such challenges require clear regulations, clear guidelines and effective enforcement. It was emphasized that with the AI Act, the European Union is already leading the way in setting frameworks for these new technologies.
Also discussed were the implications of the 2023 writers' strike, the Human Artistry Campaign and the U.S. NO FAKES Act, which seeks to curb the misuse of voices and faces. In the music industry, the main focus was on better protection for artists and encouraging investment in various musical works.
The MEPs see the visit as an important step in strengthening transatlantic cooperation. "Together we are stronger in addressing the challenges AI poses to our cultural and creative sectors," the statement said.
