Today, the Personal Data Authority (AP) sent the 2018-2024 evaluation report to the House of Representatives. This report is accompanied by a reflection of the AP's board and advisory board on the conclusions and recommendations of the evaluation.
The purpose of the evaluation was to gain insight into how the outside world values and assesses the AP's role and work. This is very important for the AP, as an independent and relatively young regulator, tasked with protecting people and their personal data in an increasingly digital world. The AP has been working with the Ministry of Justice and Security and scientists to find a format for an evaluation of effectiveness and efficiency that is appropriate within European legislation.
A committee of external experts, led by independent chairman Paul Schnabel, conducted a comprehensive evaluation. This committee also provided recommendations and advice for the coming years, which came about partly on the basis of additional research by Tilburg University and consulting firm Berenschot.
Conclusions and recommendations from the evaluation are expressly taken to heart by the AP. For example, on finding an appropriate balance as supervisor between providing information about the rules on the one hand, and enforcing the rules on the other. It is about protecting by helping as well as enforcing. The task for every AP is to propagate this, with an open mind, whether in personal contact or in formal correspondence.
The AP has since started working on this and sees the review as further encouragement. With the goal of protecting people in a digital world as well as possible.
