The data breach at Clinical Diagnostics appears to be much more extensive than thought. Initially, cyber criminals were said to have stolen the data of 485,000 people. Last Friday, the laboratory announced via its own website that 850,000 people were affected.
"It took some time to understand which data was affected by the attack. This required opening large numbers of computer files manually. These files contained different data in different formats. Then Clinical Diagnostics had to carefully link the data to healthcare providers and patients," the laboratory explains.
Since 2017, Bevolkingsonderzoek Nederland has been using the services of Clinical Diagnostics. During this period, the data of over 941,000 participants have been exchanged between Bevolkingsonderzoek Nederland and the laboratory in Rijswijk.
"The amount of leaked data is shocking. And the fact that we cannot rule out the possibility that an even larger group is involved is added to that. We feel terrible that this happened and I can imagine that people want to know how this could have happened. The same goes for us. The questions that concerned people have must be answered. We do not want another unpleasant announcement about more leaks later," said Elza den Hertog of Bevolkingsonderzoek Nederland.
