Jumbo will no longer deploy software that is supposed to recognize "abnormal behavior" of customers. In early 2024, the supermarket chain started a test with AI software in stores. At the time, Jumbo said it expected a lot from it. "Moreover, AI technology will make targeted sampling possible from now on," the company announced in February 2024.
"We did try to make use of technology by having computers recognize deviant behavior patterns, but we are not going to continue with that," Jumbo CEO Ton van Veen told De Telegraaf. "It doesn't do people's shopping feeling any good. Customers are not potential thieves, customers are very welcome, even if someone forgot to scan something once," the Jumbo CEO says.
Van Veen also does not support the use of bodycams by staff, as is taking place at supermarket chain Dirk van den Broek. The Personal Data Authority has asked Dirk van den Broek to substantiate this measure. "They must be able to demonstrate that it is necessary," he said. The regulator considers the use of cameras in the community a worrying development.
