The American tech company will send a notification to European users about this from mid-April this year. In it, Meta explains what data is involved. According to the company, it concerns "public content - such as public posts and comments." The notice includes a link to a form that allows users to object to it. The company says it will honor all objections submitted.

European Privacy Supervisors

June 2024 Meta decided to pause its intention to use user data to develop AI. This after Vienna-based nonprofit organization noyb called on 11 European privacy regulators to urgently halt this Meta plan.

Opt-in versus opt-out

"Shifting responsibility to users is completely absurd. The law requires Meta to opt-in consent, not offer a hidden and misleading opt-out form. If Meta wants to use your data, they should ask for your permission. Instead, they make users beg to be excepted. We are particularly surprised that Meta went to such lengths to build in all sorts of distractions to ensure that only a small number of users object," said noyb founder Max Schrems.
