European personnel will now have to give permission before Microsoft employees can access European data. The tech giant's announcement follows growing concerns from European governments and companies about the security of their data, much of which is held by U.S. tech companies.

Transatlantic tensions

Back in April, Microsoft announced plans to expand its AI and infrastructure capabilities in the EU, with the goal of better protecting user data. Microsoft has also said it will comply with new European legislation, including the DMA, to rein in Big Tech. This puts the company in direct opposition to the White House, which previously dismissed EU enforcement of the DMA as "economic extortion. Microsoft has also announced the launch of a "sovereign cloud" later this year. European companies and governments, by storing their data in this cloud, would have more control over their data.
