The police will receive tens of millions of euros extra from the government for digital detection and the fight against cybercrime. Justice and Security Minister Van Weel recently made this known.
Nearly 40 million euros will go to digital detection in police basic teams. With this extra money, the police will establish a central facility for digital detection. Furthermore, there will be additional specialized lateral entrants.
For the fight against cybercrime, almost 53 million euros extra is allocated. That budget will be used for central facilities for cybercrime and digitized crime at regional units and the National Investigation and Interventions Unit.
Investment will also be made in personnel with different knowledge and skills and a higher level of training. Furthermore, additional investment in the Digital Intrusion Team is being studied. This police team is allowed to "surreptitiously and remotely penetrate suspects' computer systems and devices," the police explained.
Part of the extra money will be used at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) for detection in the digital domain. The NFI will also receive additional funding to further increase forensic expertise on cybercrime.
