Available schemes

"The emphasis when deploying algorithms should not only be on punishing people. There are now also many algorithms that do good things," explained State Secretary for Digitalization Van Huffelen. Among other things, there will be research into using algorithms to alert people to available schemes. "I have also allocated money to come up with solutions to fight poverty and problematic debts with data and algorithms. Algorithms should only be used when it is really necessary to make government work well," the secretary of state said.

Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens

According to the Cabinet, "robust supervision" is indispensable to protect fundamental rights and public values: "The Cabinet is therefore investing in an algorithm supervisor to be set up during 2023. An implementation test will be carried out with respect to new supervisory tasks arising from this. Also, the budget of the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens will be structurally increased to support the supervision of compliance with the AVG in the digital domain." It was previously announced that a budget of 1 million euros has been allocated for the algorithm supervisor for the first year.
