The new strategy (1) is a refinement of the previous one and takes into account new challenges, such as new laws affecting privacy, and rapidly emerging technologies, such as AI. The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens , together with its European colleagues, will work on the following four priorities in the coming years.

Priority 1: Harmonization and improved compliance with the AVG

The EDPB considers it important that the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG) be interpreted in the same way in every European Union (EU) member state. The EDPB encourages this with, among other things, guidelines (2), which clarify various topics from the AVG. With these explanations of the AVG, the EDPB helps organizations practically on their way to applying the privacy legislation in their work.

The EDPB will also focus more on educating small and medium business owners, for example.

Priority 2: Strengthen cooperation

Proper enforcement of the AVG requires a common culture of enforcement and effective cooperation among privacy regulators in the EU. This is because organizations that collect and use personal data often operate in different countries.

Therefore, it is important that roughly the same procedures and rules for enforcement apply in each country. In 2022, the EDPB asked the European Commission to create a supplement to the AVG for this purpose (3). The EDPB will continue its efforts to get this done in the coming years. In addition, EDPB members continue to work to improve cooperation and information sharing.

Priority 3: Ensuring data protection in digital landscape

In recent years, several new European laws have come along that impact people's privacy in Europe. Think of the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act. In addition, some technologies, such as AI, have taken a stormy development in the past few years.

In the coming years, the EDPB will provide clarity on the relationship between the AVG and all new laws that touch on the AVG. In addition, the EDPB will continue to monitor new techniques.

Priority 4: Contributing to global data protection.

Privacy does not stop at the EU border. The EDPB will therefore continue to seek cooperation with non-EU governments and regulators to ensure the protection of EU citizens' personal data beyond the EU.
