Support needed to ensure privacy in smart cities

Municipalities would like to use smart technology in social tasks and find it important that the privacy of residents is guaranteed. Support in this is needed, because practice is complex. We therefore actively seek dialogue with the AP and other government partners.

Municipalities have long expressed the need for early consultation on personal data protection. Especially in areas where laws and regulations are unclear, municipalities would like to receive early advice from the Personal Data Authority (AP). VNG noted that the AP's recent fine over Wi-Fi counts has led to a reluctance by municipalities to use innovative technological solutions in carrying out their duties.

Need for intergovernmental cooperation

The Personal Data Authority (AP) did already provide valuable insights for municipalities with the report "Protection of personal data in the development of Dutch smart cities," released in late July. The report's recommendations mention the need for inter-governmental cooperation, especially the translation of domain-specific laws and regulations in relation to the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG). On this topic, as well as on the other recommendations, VNG would like to enter into discussions with the AP, national government organizations and other relevant parties.
