The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) is commissioning research into the impact of disinformation on the Dutch democratic rule of law. The research is being conducted by Wageningen University, the University of Amsterdam and the Post-X Society Foundation.

The study runs until September 2026 and focuses on several questions. What influence does disinformation have on public debate and democratic processes? And what measures are effective to ensure that everyone in the Netherlands can participate in the public debate? It also looks at the role of new technologies, such as generative AI. They can be both a risk and a tool in the fight against disinformation.
A 1st interim report will be published in mid-2025. These insights will help to further sharpen public policy around this topic. Curious about the research approach? It is described in this document: Mis- and disinformation, conceptualization within research project 'Disinformation towards a sustainable and evidence based approach'(link to other website).
Disinformation is the deliberate dissemination of misleading information for the purpose of harming public debate, democratic processes, the open economy or public health. In doing so, it can affect national security.
