In the third installment of Privacy Watchdogs, editor Tom Reijner talks with Kenneth Sleijpen, Privacy Officer at Sittard-Geleen Municipality. In addition to his work at the municipality, Sleijpen can be called something of a Privacy Influencer. Particularly on LinkedIn, he manages to captivate his followers by conveying sometimes complicated privacy issues in understandable language. Sleijpen is also a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and works as a freelance privacy consultant from his company KenJouwRecht.

Why making yourself visible is essential

By building relationships with the team, you get a lot more done, Sleijpen says. In the beginning it was mainly online coffee drinking, now he increasingly visits the city council physically and sits down periodically with the alderman. With an open personality you get a lot more done, he argues. ''Privacy legislation is about people. So you also have to focus on those people to ensure that legislation is implemented properly. That soft side and making yourself visible is essential, because just giving advice from your office no longer achieves enough.''

In the podcast, Sleijpen gives practical tips for raising privacy awareness within a municipality, which he applies himself. You can achieve a lot with small steps, Sleijpen says. He also talks about building the team within his municipality, briefly discusses data-driven work and Sleijpen shares his mixed feelings about the digital European identity card.
