The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has received complaints about Ryanair. The airline would require additional biometric identity verification for customers booking tickets through a travel agent or other party.
Privacy organization noyb had previously filed a complaint about these practices by Ryanair. However, the airline argues that this monitoring is necessary as part of a verification process. Therefore, according to Ryanair, it would be a legitimate interest. Noyb, on the other hand, believes that the purpose of the biometric check is not clear.
"The DPC has received numerous complaints from Ryanair customers in the EU who, after booking their flights, were then required to undergo a verification process. The verification methods used by Ryanair consist of the use of facial recognition technology, using customers' biometric data. This investigation will determine whether Ryanair's use of verification methods complies with the AVG," said Graham Doyle of the Irish privacy regulator.
