Stricter security requirements for wireless devices starting Aug. 1, 2025

Starting Aug. 1, 2025, phones, smartwatches, smart doorbells, modems and virtually all other wireless devices must comply with stricter European requirements. This is because on that date, a strengthened version of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) will take effect. This updated directive not only sets higher requirements for the technical safety and reliability of wireless devices, but also introduces explicit obligations in the area of cybersecurity. The goal of the new directive is to create a safer digital landscape for consumers and businesses.

CE mark

As of Aug. 1, only wireless devices that demonstrably comply with the new directive may be placed on the European market. Manufacturers, importers and distributors must ensure that their products meet the tightened requirements. If they do, they can mark the products with a CE mark. By doing so, they indicate that the product complies with all relevant European regulations, including the updated RED.

The National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate (RDI) advises all concerned parties -manufacturers, importers and distributors- to check that their products are in line with the new requirements.

Oversight by the RDI

The RDI will actively monitor compliance with the tightened rules starting August 1, 2025. Products that do not meet the new requirements may no longer be traded within the European Union.
