Uninstalling Tinder: more than just deleting the app

Tinder is perhaps the most popular dating app in the world. Every day about 10 million people are actively swiping it in search of a partner. However, Tinder has some drawbacks (1). For example, you quickly share a lot of personal information, which violates your privacy. Also, it is not safe for LGBTQ+ users everywhere in the world to use the app. After all, this group still suffers a lot of discrimination (2); in some countries it is even illegal to be gay.

Moreover, many people see Tinder as a kind of meat inspection. They then stop using the app because they don't think they can find a real connection there anyway. Are you one of these people? Or have you just found the one and want to delete Tinder? This article will tell you exactly how to do that.

Getting your information from Tinder

Maybe you will ever want to revisit all your conversations with flirts, potential partners or even creeps, or you don't want to lose that one photo on your profile. If so, it would be wise to get your information from Tinder before deleting your Tinder account.

Getting your data from Tinder is how you do it:

  1. Go to Tinder's "Manage My Account" page (3).

  2. Log in with your phone number, Facebook or Google. If you choose to log in with phone number, you will then have to log in again with Google.

  3. Click on 'Delete account'

  4. Enter the e-mail address you would like to receive the information at and clickSubmit.

  5. Your dating profile is permanently deleted and cannot be restored. However, Tinder does keep data about you in its own databases.

How long does Tinder keep your data?

Deleting your Tinder account does not mean that Tinder actually deletes your data from its database. The company keeps it for three months. If you have been banned from your account for any reason, Tinder even keeps your data for an entire year.

However, this policy does not apply to all of your data. For example, Tinder keeps your transaction data for 10 years to comply with tax and accounting legal requirements. Also, Tinder keeps your log data, that is, what you did within the app, for a year. If you give permission for this, Tinder keeps all your data for as long as five years. However, it is unclear whether "giving permission" happens automatically when you click "OK" when asked if you agree to the user agreement.

Data you shared with customer service and other support information, Tinder always keeps five years. It also keeps your "non-exact location of downloads/purchases" during this period. We assume this refers to the country you were in when you downloaded the app or purchased a subscription to Tinder Plus, Platinum or Gold. If you have previously had an account, the company keeps information about the existence of this account for three years.

In short, only after five years does Tinder delete all data about your app and customer service usage. To no longer appear in Tinder's systems at all, you have to wait ten years. Then the company will also delete your transaction data. By the way, this doesn't mean you can restore your account. Once you delete your account, you no longer have access to it.

Just a break: uninstalling the Tinder app

Maybe you haven't found the one yet, but want to take a break from swiping. If you just want a break from Tinder, you can simply delete the app from your phone. This is how you do it:

  1. Turn off being visible to others within the Tinder app. You do this easily in your profile settings.

  2. Tap log out.

  3. In your phone settings, go to "Apps.

  1. Scroll down to the Tinder app and tap it.

  2. Delete the saved files from the app under 'Storage' and tap 'Delete'.

Round out your social media detox

Now that you've deleted your Tinder account, you may want to take it a step further. Many social media platforms track everything you do online (4). Especially if you no longer use the platform itself, it's wise not to leave the account unused. Better to delete your account on any social media. You can read how to do that in these articles:
