UEFA's ticketing app that is mandatory for entry to soccer stadiums during the European Championships transmits user location data to German police.
That this information is shared is not in the description of the ticketing app in the app stores. Bayerischer Rundfunk recently published a report in which UEFA explained how location data is exchanged with authorities through the app. These can then see where fans are located. According to the soccer federation, this involves anonymized location data that is transmitted continuously through the app.
Fans are required to use the app because it is not possible to enter the stadium with a printed ticket. Ticket verification takes place via both QR codes and wireless technology, Der Spiegel reports. Bluetooth will be used to check the authenticity of the tickets, UEFA said.
