The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US telecom and media regulator, has banned sales and imports of telecommunications equipment from China's Huawei. The Biden administration considers the telecom company an unacceptable risk to U.S. national security.

Imports and sales of equipment from four other Chinese companies will also be banned. They are Hikvision and Dahua, which produce smart cameras, telecom group ZTE and radio systems manufacturer Hytera. Other countries have also banned or restricted the use of Huawei's telecom equipment. Secret services of Western countries consider Huawei an extension of the Chinese government. These include Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan and Sweden.

The British government has banned ministries from installing Chinese security cameras in sensitive locations. "Government departments have been instructed to cease the use of such equipment in sensitive locations made by companies subject to Chinese national intelligence laws," said cabinet office minister Oliver Dowden. "As security considerations are crucial at these locations, we are now taking action to prevent security risks from occurring." In the Netherlands, Huawei is prohibited from collaborating on vital parts of the 5G telecom network.
