In 2023, 184,000 Dutch people were victims of payment fraud. This involved both banking and non-banking fraud. This can be read in the Central Bureau of Statistics' (CBS) Security Monitor 2023, published every two years.

Banking fraud occurs when a criminal manages to gain access to a victim's bank account. This is done, for example, by cheating on the PIN code and stealing the bank card. In half of these cases, the damage was less than three hundred euros. In 2023, bank fraud occurred 110,000. In 2021, it was 82,000.
In non-bank payment fraud, a victim transfers money to a scammer themselves. For example, because a criminal pretends to be another person in bank helpdesk fraud or WhatsApp fraud. In 2023, this type of fraud made 74,000 victims. This is similar to the number of victims two years earlier. In half of the cases, the damage was less than four hundred euros.
