The A+O fund Rijk conducted research into the influence of technological innovations on the quality of work and sustainable employability of civil servants. Lessons can be drawn from this for better implementation. Both for managers, HR and employees themselves.

The project "The Advance of Technological Developments in the Rijksoverheid" investigated the impact of technological innovations on the quality of work and sustainable employability of central government employees (1).
Of interest is a case study around the introduction of a software robot.(See the results in this fact sheet(link to other website)). For example, employees often find new technology useful (81 percent) and a good idea (74 percent). Moreover, the workload after implementation is less than before. However, people did say they needed more resources (feedback, training) and support.
The Technology Monitor gives you more insight into how your work has changed. And gives concrete tips to get a better grip on your work and well-being during a digital transition. For example, ways to develop your skills and to reduce stress. Although developed for the government, any government employee can complete this monitor.
Executives and HR can also help make this personnel side of the digital transition better. To that end, the report provides 3 key solution directions:
1. Create a balance between task demands and resources
Important resources include feedback on work activities and support from the organization and supervisor(s).
2. Involve employees in implementation and decision-making
Greater clarity, good communication and involving employees in the introduction of a new technology are an important key in effective implementation of a technological innovation.
3. Provide opportunities for career development
Training and development contribute to the perceived quality of an introduced technology, as well as to employee acceptance and adaptation. Developing new and relevant knowledge and skills also increases the availability of personal resources, such as resilience and optimism.
