Nearly one in five employees is monitored by their employer. For 16 percent, the employer knows where personnel are via a GPS system. For 13 percent, the employer records which websites employees visit. One in three employees have cameras at work. This emerges from research by trade union CNV based on research among 2,600 working people.

Survey participants say they are not happy with this development." Employers' desire for control is rapidly increasing. Employers are eagerly using digital means to monitor employees," said CNV president Piet Fortuin. He adds that legally, monitoring is only permissible in exceptional cases, such as when there is a serious suspicion of abuse.
"But given the amount of people being monitored by their employers, employers seem to be breaking the law en masse," Fortuin continued. "Employers should steer by trust; control is detrimental to interpersonal relationships, productivity and the working atmosphere. Disastrous at a time when psychological absenteeism is very high. Above all, employers must abide by the law and not illegally monitor their staff more and more indiscriminately."
