Telecom equipment from "unreliable suppliers," including China's Huawei, poses a security risk to the United States and its allies, according to the White House.
The US will ensure that telecom networks do not use equipment from these vendors. Furthermore, the country is seeking cooperation with allies for the security of its networks. A White House spokesman announced this recently.
The new US President Joe Biden is thus following Donald Trump's policy. The previous U.S. president already waged a battle against Huawei, alleging the company could be spying for the government in Beijing. The EU then imposed stricter requirements on telecom networks seeking to use Chinese equipment.
However, no hard evidence has ever been presented that Huawei is spying for China, but experts warn of the risks. The General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) counts China among the countries actively spying digitally in the Netherlands. Biden's nominee for secretary of the economy, has also indicated that the White House wants to continue the Trump administration's hard line against Huawei. Huawei has always rejected the allegations.
