How can clerks make good use of the possibilities of digitization and make local democracy more vital and stronger? This is the subject of the Rathenau Institute's report "Clerks and digitization - towards a stronger local democracy.

Almost everyone in the Netherlands is seeing their professional practice changed by new digital technologies. This also applies to the clerks who support the representation of the people in municipal councils and Provincial Councils. Every day they have to deal with a swelling digital flow of information, which changes the interaction between the council and the municipal executive, as well as the relationship with residents. How can the possibilities of digitalization be put to good use and make local democracy more vital and stronger? That question is the thread of the report.
The report makes a number of recommendations for clerks:
Recommendation 1: engage with the council on a digital agenda for the council and clerk's office
Recommendation 2: organize the base as efficiently as possible to create space for the other ambition
Recommendation 3: from the Association of Clerks, support the development of digital (innovation) agendas.
