SEO Economic Research: Accessing data from devices

SEO Economic Research has released a report commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. More and more devices used by companies are collecting data. For example, milking robots, aircraft engines, conveyor belts, tools and tractors. This data is becoming increasingly valuable and important for service delivery, product improvement and innovation, but access to that data is not a given.

Data from devices used by companies are of value to device suppliers, device users and third parties. The data can be used for product improvement, additional services, improving the production process within the company and the production chain with other companies. Access to this data is arranged through agreements (when a device is purchased). Device suppliers can often combine data from multiple devices, creating more value (synergy benefits). Individual users of these devices often cannot. If it becomes easier to offer or solicit data from devices, through a marketplace, access to data can be improved, thereby creating more value socially. The researchers propose to further explore the development of data marketplaces.
