Is a copy or photo of my ID required to verify who I am on social media?

ANSWER

Social media sometimes need to verify who you are. For example, if you want a "checkmark" on your profile to show that your profile is trustworthy. Or if your account has been blocked, and you want access again. This control is necessary because social media are required to properly protect your personal information. And to prevent the wrong person from accessing your account and data.

When copy ID?

Requiring a photo or copy of your ID may only:

  • If the company behind the social media has a reason to doubt that you are who you say you are. For example, if there is suspicious activity on your account; and

  • If there really is no other way to verify who you are.

In general, you can assume this:

  • If you want to access a blocked account again, social media check who you are. That way, they avoid giving the wrong person access to your account. But a photo or copy of your ID card is probably not the only way to verify that you are the owner of the account. You can ask the company to give you another option.

  • Is your account blocked and you just want to delete it? Then in principle, a photo or copy of your ID proof is not necessary. Because then there is probably only a limited risk that the wrong person would gain access to your data. After all, it is not about access, but only deletion.

  • Is a photo or copy of your ID proof really necessary, and does the company also explain well why? We do recommend that you cover your BSN in that case. And other information the company doesn't need, too. Your name and possibly your photo are usually enough to verify who you are.
