My data has been leaked. What can I do?

ANSWER

Your personal data could end up in the wrong hands if an organization suffers a data breach. For example, your phone number, (e-mail) address or a copy of your ID card. This can have unpleasant consequences for you. That is why it is important to know what you can do.

Prevent abuse and (identity) fraud

Have you received notice from an organization about a data breach? Or do you yourself suspect that your data has been leaked? Take immediate action:

  • Have your email address and password been leaked? Change your password(s) as soon as possible. Tip: Use different passwords and store them in a password manager. Set up multi-factor authentication where you can.

  • Has your e-mail address or phone number been leaked? Watch for suspicious emails, text messages and phone calls. With leaked data, criminals can make a message look very trustworthy. So check carefully who you are dealing with. Don't just click on any link. And never give someone your password or PIN number.

  • Has (a copy of) your ID been leaked? Prevent identity fraud. First report it to your municipality. You can then apply for a new ID card. Are you receiving messages about purchases you did not make yourself? Or do you see strange statements on your account? Report this to the police and the Central Identity Fraud Disclosure Office (CMI).
