The AI regulation will enter into force in stages. The first rules will apply from Feb. 2, 2025, in the Netherlands. On Aug. 2, 2027, the entire law will apply. You can read about the main steps in this process below.
February 2025
AI applications with an unacceptable risk are banned.
Organizations must ensure an adequate level of AI literacy among employees and others using AI systems on their behalf.
August 2025
Supervisors of AI compliance in the Netherlands must be known. Designated supervisors are given the power to take action and impose fines.
The rules for providers of so-called general purpose AI models go into effect. These models are also known as general purpose AI.
August 2026
Start monitoring of high-risk AI obligations (defined in Annex III of the regulation).
Start monitoring transparency obligations for certain AI systems. People need to know they are dealing with an AI system or AI-generated content.
The Dutch "regulatory sandbox" was launched to provide advice to providers of AI systems on complex questions about the rules in the AI regulation.
August 2027
Start surveillance of high-risk AI in existing regulated products (Annex I AI Regulation).
The AI regulation is in full force and effect.
August 2030
End of extended transition period for existing AI at government organizations.
