Article 7.18 Hoisting and lifting equipment

  • 1

A hoisting or lifting appliance shall be marked at or near its operating position with a clearly legible indication, indicating the permissible operating load for each usual configuration of that appliance.

  • 2

A hoisting or lifting appliance shall not, except for the purpose of testing, be loaded beyond the permissible operating load or loads nor more heavily than safe use permits.

  • 3

Hoisting and lifting equipment shall be operated by persons with specific expertise to do so.

  • 4

No persons shall be transported with a hoisting or lifting apparatus exclusively intended and equipped for the transportation of goods in the place of or together with goods.

  • 5

A hoisting or lifting equipment that is not intended or equipped for hoisting or lifting persons and where there is a risk of misuse shall be equipped with an easily legible warning against the transport of persons.

  • 6

Hoisting and lifting equipment shall be arranged in such a way as to reduce the danger of the loads striking workers, or inadvertently becoming dangerously out of position or in free fall, or becoming dislodged.

  • 7

Effective measures are taken to ensure that workers do not hide under suspended loads.

  • 8

Suspended loads shall not be moved above non-protected work areas where workers are generally located.

  • 9

If, in applying paragraphs seven and eight, the proper conduct of the work cannot be guaranteed, appropriate procedures shall be established and applied to ensure the safety of the workers concerned.
