The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP) has conducted an investigation into how MediaMarkt monitors its employees. The investigation was prompted by several reports about the use of camera observations.

Staff would be observed by so-called "mystery shoppers" and later confronted with recordings. Recordings taken with security cameras would also be used to monitor employees.
The study focuses on the following questions:
Does MediaMarkt conduct covert camera observations as part of Mystery Shopping and similar trainings?
If so, does MediaMarkt have a basis for this as referred to in Article 8 of the Personal Data Protection Act (Wbp)?
Does MediaMarkt process footage of camera observations taken for security purposes to evaluate employees on their behavior/function?
If so, is this processing compatible with the original purpose, as referred to in Article 9 of the PDPA?
AP concluded in the investigation that MediaMarkt acted in violation of Article 8 and Article 9, paragraphs 1 and 2, of the Wbp.
