Tackling disinformation: actions and measures

The spread of disinformation has increased in recent years, due in part to the rise of generative AI. Both in scope and intensity. Therefore, new measures to deal with disinformation have been introduced as of June 2024. In 2017, the previous administration came up with the first policy around this issue.

Digitale Overheid July 26, 2024

New actions

  • There will be a reporting facility, dispute resolution body and knowledge center. This should allow citizens to submit disputes over content moderation decisions made by online platforms.

  • There will also be an additional grant to the BENEDMO consortium, strengthening the fact checkers network in the Netherlands. BENEDMO is a Flemish-Dutch cooperation against disinformation, for and by factcheckers, media professionals, scientists and other experts.

  • Measures are underway:

    • to combat disseminators and spread of disinformation;

    • To strengthen citizen resilience;

    • for knowledge development and effectively addressing disinformation.

Key focus areas

4 focus areas have been identified as critical to protect against the risks of disinformation spread:

  • Crucial democratic processes, including elections;

  • Public health, including mental health and vaccinations;

  • Social and societal stability;

  • Commitment to (international) security and stability.
