On May 20, Leiden University's Center for Law and Digital Technology (eLaw) is organizing the annual Hans Franken Lecture to be given by Aleid Wolfsen. The title of the lecture is: Guardian of Fundamental Rights in the Digital Rule of Law?

Aleid Wolfsen has been chairman of the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP) since 2016. He was previously associated with the AP as a member of the Advisory Board. In 2019, the European regulators, united in the EDPB, elected Aleid Wolfsen as their vice chairman. Before his appointment as chairman of the AP, Wolfsen worked both in politics and within the judiciary. Between 1998-2001, he was a judge in Amsterdam and then vice president of the Haarlem District Court until early 2002. From May 2002 to 2008, he was a member of parliament for the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) and dealt with Justice and Antillean affairs, among other things. He was mayor of Utrecht from 2008 to 2014.
Wolfsen served from 1979 to 1994 in various positions at the public prosecutor's office and the district court in Zwolle. He combined the work with studying law at the University of Groningen, which he completed in 1993. After that, he worked at the Ministry of Justice, including as project leader of the Revision of the Judicial Organization.
Starting in 2018, the Hans Franken Lecture will be held annually by scholars or prominent figures concerned with developments in technology and law.
