NCSC subsidizes development of RPKI software for secure routing of Internet traffic

In late 2018, the NCSC awarded a grant to the NLnet Labs foundation to encourage the development of RPKI software. Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) is a set of standards that network operators can use to secure the routing of Internet traffic. The NCSC sees the potential of RPKI to increase the reliability of routing. RPKI adoption can help counter human error and detect and protect against leaked or manipulated routing information.

RPKI tools NLnet Labs
NLnet Labs is a Dutch developer of open source software and open standards for the Internet. Existing software from NLnet Labs is used worldwide in domain name retrieval. NLnet Labs recently developed software that covers the three parts of RPKI: (1) generating signed statements, (2) publishing them, and (3) validating the statement. With the grant, the NCSC is contributing to the availability and diversity of reliable software for RPKI.

Grants to improve digital security
The Dutch Cyber Security Agenda is committed to standardization to prevent digital security risks in hardware and software. In November, the NCSC also awarded a grant to ECP for the further development of e-mail tests on Internet.nl. This contribution will also make it possible in the future to test e-mail servers for the validation step of e-mail authentication standards SPF, DKIM and DMARC. In the fact sheet "Protect your domain names from phishing," the NCSC advises applying these standards to counter phishing on behalf of your domain names.
