Stichting Data Bescherming Nederland (SDBN) has launched a lawsuit against Amazon. The online store allegedly failed to comply with privacy laws.

Amazon collected and traded personal data without users' consent, according to SDBN. "Moreover, the company has made a lot of money commercializing your (privacy-sensitive) data. We find that unfair. High time, therefore, to call Amazon to order," SDBN states. It concerns data that Amazon would collect through its own web store. The foundation points out that users are tracked in the webshop, even if they have not consented to this. "In short, the problem is that Amazon collects much of this data without users' explicit consent and without any other valid basis. That violates the law," SDBN said.
Through the lawsuit, the foundation wants to force Amazon to cease these activities and pay compensation to users. People with accounts at Amazon can sign up for the mass claim at no cost. A litigation financier will pay for the case. If the claim is upheld, it will receive compensation of up to 20 percent of the compensation amount. "We aim to issue the subpoena in court before the end of this year. We do not expect a ruling until 2026 at the earliest," SDBN said.
