Police message on Telegram in phishing investigation

Limburg - On Jan. 18, the cybercrime team of the Limburg unit announced it had arrested a 20-year-old man in a phishing investigation with the help of the Rotterdam unit. This investigation has continued. In the fight against this form of crime, the Limburg cybercrime team has taken new steps.

The 20-year-old man is suspected of offering phishing panels: ready-made packages including websites and domains that make it possible to send large amounts of phishing emails. These phishing panels thus make it possible for others to commit payment fraud, for example. The 20-year-old man from Rotterdam offered these phishing panels via Telegram. A pseudo purchase, related bitcoin payments and communication with the seller pointed the police in the direction of the suspect in question.

On Aug. 3, a message from the police was distributed on related Telegram channels toward potential phishing panellists or sellers: 'Next time you rent or sell something again, you may do so to us as police.' This emphasizes that you don't know who you are talking to online. It could just be that the police are on the other end, covertly purchasing banned software.
