Misconfigurations by users of cloud services such as AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage and Azure Blob Storage cause more data breaches than hackers. That conclusion is reached by researchers led by Soufian El Yadmani, PhD student at Leiden University.

TU Delft and Csirt.Global, an international Computer Security Incident Response Team, were also involved in the study. The study mainly reveals security vulnerabilities in cloud storage buckets. A bucket is a compartment with policies that determine who, what actions may perform on objects and data contained in the bucket.
According to researchers, most data breaches do not occur because of cybercriminals: "They occur because of human error: misconfigurations, mistakes and lack of systems management efforts. This is especially evident with the growing reliance on cloud environments to store and host data."
