Starting this summer, the National Office for Identity Data (RvIG) will gradually replace the chips in passports and ID cards. The reason is that the current chips in the passports and ID cards are outdated and no longer available. To replace the chips in the documents, we are organizing a number of so-called "migration days.
In early July, the first migration day to replace a chip in the passport was successful. The following steps were completed:
The test subjects applied for passports in their hometowns.
A personalized passport with a new chip was produced.
The personalized passport was checked. One of the checks was to read the new chip and verify the data.
The municipalities issued passports to the test subjects after a few working days.
Passports with this new chip are expected to be introduced by the end of July. This new chip will still only support the Password Authenticated Connection Establishment (PACE) protocol to read data. More information can be found in this news release (1).
To test a new chip in the passport, we worked with the municipalities of Meerssen, Leiden and Oegstgeest.
For the other migration days, we are still looking for municipalities willing to implement the passport and identity card application and issuance process with a new chip. These migration days are scheduled on:
Aug. 25, 2022: testing ID card and other passport models related to phasing out Basic Access Control (BAC) protocol on the chip of these documents (2).
September/October 2022: testing new chip identity card
