In our information society, the use of data offers enormous opportunities. For example, municipalities can use data to predict developments, develop smarter policies and strengthen implementation.
With the data strategy 'Opgavegericht en Verantwoord Datagedreven Werken' (Task-oriented and Responsible Data-driven Working), VNG wants to support municipalities in making use of these possibilities (1). At the same time, public values and basic digital rights of residents - such as equal treatment, privacy, transparency and social utility - must be central at all times.
Many municipalities have started innovative data use for social tasks in recent years, from energy transition to determining the WOZ value of homes. Much has been learned and useful experience has been gained, but due to the great variety of initiatives, scaling up is not easily possible. With a unifying strategy, municipalities can use data more effectively for their societal challenges.
With the strategy, the VNG aims to provide a solid foundation, with goals for 2030:
A strong information position for all municipalities so that they can work effectively on societal tasks;
Strengthening the joint municipal information position, through mutual learning and benchmarking;
Leveraging data for advocacy, knowledge sharing and implementation support;
Provide municipalities with a solid data foundation so they can accelerate responsibly within existing frameworks.
Municipalities are not alone. Through the Intergovernmental Data Strategy we work together with provinces, water boards and the state on responsible use of data by the government for social tasks (2) VNG promotes the interests of municipalities in the realization of the Intergovernmental Data Strategy and is committed to making intergovernmental support available to municipalities, such as the advisory function responsible data use.
