The KNMG guideline "Handling Medical Data" describes the manner in which physicians, while respecting their professional secrecy, may collect, store, exchange or otherwise use medical data.

In 2018, new privacy legislation came into force (the General Data Protection Regulation: AVG). As this may also apply to the handling of medical data, the Guideline has been adapted accordingly. The Directive has seven chapters:
General rules for sharing medical data
Medical advice, assessment or indication on behalf of third parties
Data disclosure in legal proceedings
Data capture in monitoring and enforcement
Some specific situations
File and retention period
Patient rights regarding the record
