In 2017, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam conducted research on behalf of the Human Rights Board on almost all online job postings in 2017. Using a specially developed algorithm, 1.8 million job postings were analyzed. The research was repeated this year for online job postings published in 2019. This time over 3.1 million unique job posting texts were scanned, showing that in tens of thousands of cases age is a criterion.

Distinguishing by age in the recruitment and selection of personnel is prohibited under the Equal Treatment in Employment Act (WGBL). Nevertheless, the direct or indirect imposition of age requirements on candidates in job ads seems to occur regularly. Because the consequences of age discrimination during the recruitment and selection of personnel can be very negative, it is important to understand the extent and nature of age discrimination in job ads.
