Espionage: how to recognize it and what can you do about it?

How do you recognize espionage and how can you protect your organization against it? This is what our account managers inform organizations about with the help of the new AIVD publication "Espionage: how to recognize it and what can you do about it?

Passing on knowledge about Dutch foreign policy, copying and handing over documents from the European Commission for a fee or hacking a high-tech company to capture trade secrets. These are all examples of espionage. But what is espionage? Espionage is the clandestine collection of intelligence (information) or objects (for example, products or machines). It may involve, for example, sensitive (personal) information, technology or state secrets.

The Netherlands is an attractive target for espionage. Our country is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) and possesses interesting information.
In addition, we host numerous international organizations such as the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Dutch universities and industry also possess a great deal of knowledge and high technology. The General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) is tasked with recognizing espionage, helping to end it and raising awareness of it.
