I am getting a new client. I would like to request information from the past in order to get the right help. My client doesn't want this. What can I do?

ANSWER

As a new caregiver, you will usually receive the file from the previous caregiver. That previous care worker must first ask the client for permission to transfer the file. If, as a new caregiver, you have not received a file, you can inquire with the client and ask him/her if you may request the old file.

It is important to clearly inform the client of the importance of previous information. For example, this information is needed to correctly assess needed help. Or to avoid having to determine again what is needed. If the client still does not want you to request information, see if there are other bases (see question What are the bases for sharing information?) on which you can request information.

If you suspect that children are growing up in an unsafe situation, you may consider making a report in the Youth at Risk (VIR) or the Reporting code for domestic violence and child abuse report. This can be done without consent. If you want to make a report in the VIR, you should discuss this with the client or the parents or legal representatives.
