A first working version of the NL ID wallet was published in late March. The next step is the development of an issuing and receiving facility and the performance of tests. With an ID-wallet recognized by the Dutch government, citizens and entrepreneurs will soon be able to do business digitally. In the Netherlands and across the border in other European member states. The exact date when this will be possible is not yet known.
The code for a first working version of the NL ID wallet (1) has been published on GitHub (2) and the screens on Figma (3). After installing the app, users choose a personal PIN. They then activate the app with DigiD and their driver's license or identity card. The user then receives "tickets" in their ID wallet. On them are personal data, such as name, date of birth and residential address. Then the ID wallet is ready for use. With the wallet, one can then log in at government organizations or share personal data, for example. More functions will be added in future versions. A user can decide which proofs he or she adds to the ID wallet. Use of the ID wallet is voluntary. The app is expected to be available in app stores by the end of 2026.
The first version of NL ID-wallet is being extensively tested in practice. The project team will first work on logging in at a municipality and submitting data during a mortgage application. They are also testing how users can easily fill the wallet with data. And how organizations can retrieve, check and use data from the app.
